Fish Curry

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

Here's one great and  quick recipe of fish in thick gravy. This is the usual way of making this curry in Hyderabad, India and one can substitute lamb meat in place of fish (or vegetables) and achieve the same results. The trick in achieving the perfect texture is, to roast, grind and fry the ingredients.


Fish-3 fillets of cod, cubed

for the gravy..,

Peanuts-1/2 cup, roasted
Coconut powder- 3/4 cup,roasted
White sesame seeds-2 tbs, roasted
Onions-1/2 sliced, sauteed
Oil-as needed
Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds-1/2 tsp
Ginger-garlic paste-1 tbs
Tamarind pulp-1 cup
Salt-to taste
Red pepper powder- to taste
Turmeric powder-1/2 tsp
Coriander powder-1 tsp
Black seeds-1/2 tsp

for tempering..,

Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds-1/2 tsp
Curry leaf-a handful


1. Grind all the roasted ingredients listed under gravy to a smooth paste and set aside.

2. Heat oil in a pot and pop in the cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and after they sizzle, add the curry leaves.

3. Put in the ground paste, and roast carefully (as the mixture tends to spew out of the pot) on medium-high heat until it gets roasted and oil seperates itself from the mixture.

4. Add the tamarind pulp along with the fish cubes and bring to a boil.

5.Reduce heat and cook for 10 minutes until oil floats on top.

6. Turn off the stove and transfer to a serving plate and serve.

  3. This looks so good! Cardamom powder is an interesting addition.

    1. Oops! SproutsofSpring, that was supposed to be coriander powder not cardamom:( It was just a side-effect of multi-tasking.I have corrected and updated it now.
